    Jaguar at Juakani

A jaguar at Jukani Wildlife reserve (Mosselbaai, South Africa) gnaws on a barb-wired fence, which, perhaps not coincidentally, acts as the only separation between it's jaws and a 4-year-old tourist. Amazed at the confidence of my fellow interns in what appeared to me to be a flimsy barrier, I quickly found myself badgering the guide with questions about the strength of the cats, their eating habits, and the effectiveness of the ceiling-less enclosings. Although my confidence in the safety of the barbed wire fence as an effective barrier was definitely not increased upon learning that the strength in the chest of a male lion is equivalently powerful to 13 full-grown men, I quickly stopped thinking about whether or not the cats wanted to eat me, and instead found myself entranced with the power embodied in their movement, as well as the almost human-like intelligence evident in their eyes. The following photographs were taken with a 300 mm telephoto lens, at ISO 200, f/4.5, and shutter speed between 1/500 and 1/1250 sec.
